“it’s not about
win or lose cause
we all lose
when they feed on the souls of the innocent”
These are lyrics from reggae musician Matisyahu’s song “One Day.” The kids in CHC Florida’s STEP (Supported Training and Employment) program performed it when they unveiled their anti-bullying mural inside a local high school last week. Kim Schurr, Executive Director of CHC-FL, is beaming proud of their work; “It was a project they worked on all year.”
STEP serves Deaf and hard of hearing children and others at risk. Funding from the Children Services Council of Broward County, Florida makes it all possible, so we have the whole community to thank.
Ghandi’s most famous quote is featured on the wall:
“Be The Change You Want To See In The World”
CHC Florida kids are a shining example of the positivity and diversity they want to spread. Student-powered missions and initiatives work, and hopefully Plantation High School is now a place where kids have to worry a little less about being picked on for differences.
There are so many citizens and schools who have made the movement against bullying such a strong one. Is there anyone who can’t remember the hurt of having your peers give you cruelty, embarrassment, or worse?
Deaf children and kids with hearing loss face the threat of bullying
And it’s especially hard when hearing loss itself can keep you isolated and outside of the joke. Unfortunately, a quick internet search turns up lots of stories about kids with hearing loss being victimized. Recently, Marlee Maltin tweeted an American Sign Language video against bullying:
Parents and students, share with us in the comments: what are your schools doing in support of the anti-bullying movement?
We hope CHC’s mural inspires schools everywhere to take a stand and paint their walls with murals against bullying. It takes one person with initiative to make things happen.
