World Hearing Day – which is officially being celebrated this year on Sunday, March 3rd – was established by the World Health Organization to draw attention to the importance of early identification and intervention for hearing loss. Many people live with unidentified hearing loss, often failing to realize that they are missing out on certain sounds and words. Checking one’s hearing is the first step towards addressing the issue.
CHC encourages three steps to healthy hearing:
- Limit Noise Exposure – Everyday sounds like subway trains or music on your smartphone can cause permanent hearing loss if the volume is too high. Learn to turn down the volume on your phone or music player and wear hearing protection in noisy situations. If you’re a parent or educator, teach your children about the dangers of noise exposure.
- Get Your Hearing Screened – Make annual hearing screenings a part of your overall health and wellness program. Five minutes with a licensed audiologist is all it takes.
- Follow Up with a Complete Evaluation – If your hearing screening suggests a hearing loss, follow up with a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. And do follow your audiologist’s recommendations. Your health depends on it! Untreated hearing loss increases your risk for depression, falls and dementia.
We applaud the World Health Organization’s commitment to early identification and intervention for hearing loss and are thrilled to be participating in this global educational platform.
