Today there are many different styles of hearing aids. The one that is best for you will depend on many factors, including the amount of hearing loss you have and the listening situations you are in on a daily basis. The best way to determine the hearing aid that’s right for you is to have your hearing tested by a licensed audiologist and discuss the options available to you.

We provide comprehensive hearing aid testing and fitting to infants, children and adults with all degrees of hearing loss. No one is too young and no one is too old to benefit from amplification and we will work with you to find the best option for your individual needs.

Hearing Aid Styles

A Receiver-In-Canal (RITE or RIC)

is an over the ear hearing aid with the loudspeaker (also called a receiver) inside the ear canal. The speaker connects to the hearing aid behind the ear by a tiny wire. This style is sometimes called a receiver-in-the-ear. RIC hearing aids can be used with custom earmolds or with plastic domes.

Behind the ear (BTE) – traditional

A “traditional” behind-the-ear hearing aid offers more power than most receiver in the ear hearing aids and is a good solution for people with a more significant hearing loss. It rests behind the ear with a tube that carries amplified sound to the ear canal. The sound tube is connected to a plastic piece called an earmold that fits inside the ear canal. Earmolds are customized to each individual. While appropriate for all ages, this style is ideal for very young children because of the size of the small size of children’s ear canals.

Custom Hearing Aids

Custom in the ear hearing aids come in a variety of styles and sizes; they are custom molded for the individual. Size selection may depend on the degree of the hearing loss, the size of the person’s ear canal, and the hearing aid options one chooses. Some, but not all, custom aids offer Bluetooth connectivity, t-coils, and the ability to be rechargeable.

BAHA

Bone-anchored hearing aids are used for people who cannot have anything in their ear canals due to any one of several medical conditions that prevent an aid from being worn safely in or on the ear. Certain BAHAs are designed to be surgically inserted into the bone behind the ear (mastoid bone). The bone-anchored aid is placed on the abutment; the aid transmits sound through the abutment through vibrations of the bones in the skull. Other BAHAs are also available in styles that do not require surgery.

PSAP

Personal sound amplification products (PSAPs) are devices that are not classified as hearing aids but offer the ability to effectively amplify sound in certain listening situations. The model we carry at CHC is the CS50+ from Sound World Solutions. It has the look of a Bluetooth headset that you often see people wearing for work or recreation with a price tag that is budget friendly. It’s best to see your audiologist for a complete hearing evaluation before determining if a PSAP is right for you.

Wireless connectivity

Many hearing aids can connect wirelessly to your smartphone through Bluetooth. An app that the hearing aid manufacturer provides will turn your phone into a remote control, allowing you to change volume, programs and adjust other features. Many aids have a “find my hearing aids” feature in the event the aids are misplaced. For the person wearing two hearing aids that are Bluetooth enabled, telephone calls and other media are heard in both ears. The ability to hear in both ears greatly enhances clarity for many listeners.

Various accessories are available to enhance hearing aid use. These accessories can help with hearing television and sounds from your computer. Speak to your audiologist to determine what will work best for you.
