Center for Hearing and Communication Celebrates NEA’s Read Across America Day Mar 2, 2019
NEW YORK/March 1, 2019 – The Center for Hearing and Communication (CHC) will celebrate the joy of reading on Saturday, March 2 from 10 AM to 12 PM, and recognize Dr. Seuss’ birthday at CHC’s headquarters at 50 Broadway in Manhattan. Children with hearing loss, ages three to eight and their families, will come to CHC to enjoy a day of face painting, balloon art, cotton candy, and special time with CHC deaf and hard of hearing teens who will read together with the younger children.
CHC’s world class auditory-oral speech and language program for children who are deaf and hard of hearing teaches children with all degrees of hearing loss to use spoken language, to hear using hearing aids or cochlear implants, and to join their peers in mainstream educational environments. Children are introduced to reading in their very early preschool years as mastering reading is the cornerstone of later education. CHC’s Teacher of the Deaf, Dana Selznick, makes learning to read fun and before they know it, many of our four-year-olds are fluent readers. “Knowing that children with hearing loss often struggle with reading, I try to empower our children to gain literacy skills alongside or even ahead of their hearing peers. At CHC, our goal is to provide children with the necessary skills to hear, speak and read about the world around them. We are excited to share with our kids how fun reading can be by celebrating the author who brought us endless pages of imagination,” says Ms. Selznick.
